郭顯德在中國山東的宣教工作長達五十六年，足跡遍佈山東，十九世紀末至二十世紀五O年代，郭顯德曾是全山東省家喻戶曉的人物。 1936年，山東滕縣華北神學院院長赫士(Rev. W. M. Hayes, D.D.)描述：「郭顯德性情良善，心地慈悲，幾乎婦孺皆知。在1900年的庚子事變中，拳匪殺人如麻，甚至雞犬不留，馨室皆空，唯獨對於郭顯德牧師，拳匪相戒不可殺害，由此可見其深為魯省人士所欽佩景仰。郭顯德畢生投注在建立教會，引人歸主，無人能分其心，無事能擾其志；其虔誠祈禱，奮力向前；遇困難而不知懼，見逼迫而不心驚；恕人以恩，待人以惠；時流淚以禱告，恆傾囊以助人；他有如基督一般，使仇敵悔過，罪人知改；其美名乃懷蓄人心；他四處行走為善，處處可為模範。」 郭顯德一生大多開荒草昧，無暇著述，因此今人對郭顯德的認識，遠不如倪維思與狄考文，正如赫士對他的形容，"too busy making history to write history." 本書為他的女婿魁格海(James R. E. Craighead)牧師於1921年所著，為此天國英雄在歷史中留下見證。使他在一百多年後的今天，卻「因這信，仍舊說話。」
