一五七七年出生於英國薩福克的托斯德（Tostock, Suffolk），在伯理˙聖艾文（Bury St Edmunds）求學，一五九五年到了劍橋的聖約翰書院就讀。當時在聖安德烈教堂繼威廉˙柏金斯（William Perkins）任職的是保羅˙貝尼（Paul Bayne），他滿有能力的宣講使薛伯斯悔改得救。一六一零年薛伯斯取得道學學士（B.D.）資歷，獲委任為劍橋三一教堂的講師。然而，五年後卻因為他的清教徒傾向而被革職。一六一七年，薛伯斯獲選任為倫敦葛雷驛站（Gray’s Inn）牧者，並擔任此職至一六二六年。那一年，他回到劍橋成為聖凱撒琳堂（St Catherine’s Hall）的主牧，後又在聖三一教堂任教區牧師。一六二七年他取得道學博士（D.D.），自此，因他宣講的內容及態度，人們稱譽他為「天堂醫生薛伯斯」。薛伯斯一直在倫敦的葛雷驛站、劍橋的三一教堂以及聖凱撒琳堂事奉，直到一六三五年七月去世，終年五十八歲。
