梅晨(J. Gresham Machen, 1881-1937通譯“梅欽”)博士,賀浦金斯大學畢業後,入任普林斯頓神學院;在那裏,深受堅強加爾文主義教授華斐德(Benjamin Warfield, 1851-1921)和巴頓(Francis L. Patton, 1843-1932)的影響。1805年畢業,繼赴德國研究。後任普林斯頓的新約講師,及護教學教授(1906-1929)。
J.G. Machen lived in turbulent times. America was founded by the Puritans. Until the 1740's Christianity was the assumed religion of almost all Americans. Even in the 19th century, most Americans were still confession to believe. But in the early 20th century, the Christian religion - especially the Bible, the book of Genesis, and the beleif in miracles - was under attack. In the middle of this war, J.G. Machen defended historical Christianity. On his right were the dispensationalists or "fundamentalists". Machen understood that they were his alleys in the war. Reformed leaders had and still have serious problems with their theology. But in the cultural struggle, Machen was united with them against Moderism. We see this in struggle against Moderism in all his books. His writings are clear and fair. They get right to the point - showing how little evidence the Moderist's have. And, as always, when we go back and read, Machen's critique of Moderism is persuasive; and the Moderist's critique of Machen is empty rhetoric.
God's ways are perfect. But it is hard for us to know why this great warrier was taken away in the prime of his life.
梅晨是傑出的學者和教師,自然的成為保守派的中流砥柱。他看到自由派敗壞人心的危險,不能閉口不言,為了信仰,領袖對新派口誅筆伐,並成立獨立宣教差會。
1929年,梅晨率同數位保守信仰的教授,在非拉鐵非(Philadelphia)創立了威斯敏德神學院(Westminster Seminary),梅晨任院長兼新約教授,持守普林斯頓的固有改革宗信仰,並學術水準,造就忠心的教牧。
那時,美國長老會漸為自由派所控制。結果,梅晨受到長老會區會的查訊,終於在1935年,被美國長老會總會停止並褫奪牧職。1936年,梅晨成立正統長老會(The Orthodox Presbyterian Church)。
1937年一月一日,梅晨在講道時逝世。正統長老會因領導乏人,幾經變遷分裂,趨於式微。而威斯敏德神學院,則繼續發展,成為福音派神學的堅強堡壘,發揚改革宗信仰的光輝。
